About ESRNexus

In an effort to accelerate research and encourage collaboration TrialStat introducedESRNexus (electronic systematic review nexus), a publicly searchable online coded reference library, in the fall of 2007. ESRNexus is designed to facilitate and promote the reuse of data that has been manually extracted from reference materials such as journal articles during the conduct of systematic reviews that have used TrialStat's SRS tool. References in the database are searchable in a manner similar to the United States National Library of Medicine's PubMed database, but in addition to standard fields, ESRNexus references also contain coded fields for all of the data to help improve the precision of searches

A Community Approach to Data Coding
The goal of ESRNexus to advance and accelerate the research process by allowing data captured during the systematic review process to be reused in future reviews and for other research purposes.
For the ESRNexus database to be useful it must provide deep coverage across a broad spectrum of research topics. By having reputable organization contribute their data to ESRNexus it allows the database to be easily populated, kept up-to-date and accurate.

TrialStat's SRS is currently the world's most widely used online tool for conducting systematic reviews. This web-based tool is used to manage the process of reference screening, data extraction and reporting in systematic reviews. SRS provides a near-paperless process which substantially reduces data collection errors, provides full auditability and transparency of process, facilitates international study collaboration and allows real-time monitoring of review progress.

During an SRS-based review, references are screened and data is extracted via a web interface directly into the study?s online database. The goal of ESRNexus is to allow SRS users to publish their study references along with their screening and extraction data (such as study characteristics) quickly and easily so that this information can be reused by other researchers or the public.

Publishing data collected in SRS to the public ESRNexus is entirely voluntary and reviewers who choose to publish data will retain copyright over their materials. The ESRNexus library is publicly available for searching free of charge.

Who is Contributing to the ESRNexus Database Today?

Some of the most prominent research organizations in the world are helping to build the ESRNexus database. Contributors include members of Campbell Collaboration, McMaster University, Stanford University, The Norwegian Knowledge Center for Health Services and many more. These groups share a common value: that we must continue to strive for better, more efficient ways of conducting research for the advancement of our global society.

Free Reference Information Exchange Database (FRIEnD) Program for Cochrane and Campbell Review Groups

ESRNexus is a community-driven search tool that relies on the contributions of reference information from professional researchers from around the world.

The FRIEND program recognizes that many important review groups are non-profit organizations. As part of this program, TrialStat will make SRS freely available to research groups conducting Cochrane Collaboration or Campbell Collaboration reviews in exchange for their participation in helping to build the ESRNexus library.

  • To help build and maintain a freely accessible, coded reference database for researchers and consumers to use; and,
  • To make SRS available to world-leading not-for-profit teams conducting important research.

Publishing data from an SRS project to the ESRNexus is managed by a simple Publishing Wizard that will guide users through the process. The average time required to publish data from an SRS project to the ESRNexus is about 20 minutes.

How You Can Participate

  • Be a Contributor
    • If you are conducting a review on SRS, consider publishing a subset of your collected reference data or even just the abstracts from your review to the ESRNexus database so that others may benefit from it.
    • If you are conducting a Cochrane or Campbell review, consider taking advantage of the opportunity to use SRS at no charge and contribute to the ESRNexus database at the same time.
  • Be an Advisor
    • The ESRNexus project is community driven. We need information specialists and experienced systematic review experts to participate in shaping and optimizing the database. This would include:
      • Review and approve new coding terms
      • Advising on search methods and interface optimization
      • Advising on import, export and data presentation formats
